Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland. It is by far the largest community in Iceland, with a population of about 115,000. Including the neighboring towns, the capital area has a total population of about 170,000, which is about 60% of Iceland’s population of 300,000 people.
Reykjavik is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides.
The true wealth of Iceland is water. Because of water, Reykjavík is possibly the cleanest capital in the world. Houses are heated with geothermal water, a renewable, non-pollutant source of energy. Geothermal water is used for various, other purposes, e.g. for swimming pools, solariums, greenhouses and clear sidewalks and driveways from icing and snow from settling. Hot spring water is of great benefit to the people in the greater-Reykjavik area. Hot-spring water has a valuable economic impact, as hot-spring resources contribute to electricity production and for various industry use.
